Most of us were raised in a culture that emphasizes the ideals of independence and control. The general idea is that we are on our own and we don’t need any help from anyone else. That if we are really successful it’s because we are in complete control. In reality it is the opposite it’s only when we surrender that true lasting success comes. We cannot accomplish anything truly great without a little help along the way. The idea that we must do everything alone actually causes us a great deal of suffering. Surrender comes when we see that illusion and let go of trying to attain the impossible. Surrender can then be seen as a great strength rather than a weakness.
Even small moments of surrender are powerful indicators of how different our lives could be if we would only let go. Have you ever extended huge amounts of effort and energy to reach a particular goal only to realize that it won’t work out for you at all? The moment we let go releasing our agenda entirely, a profound feeling of relief may rush over us. It is never too late to let go, even of things in the past that didn’t work out the way we wanted them to. When we finally surrender our goals actually become possible. Because in essence we are asking for the help we need. This help may come in the form of human beings, angels or inner guides. The small miracles that we call grace shift our circumstances.
One tool to help you begin to surrender is writing. Writing our your thoughts is a healing and effective way to process your life experiences, no matter how distant. Writing can help you let go of emotional pain, tap into your memories, explore expectations and identify blame. Ultimately you can learn how to forgive yourself, other people, or even life itself. You'll emerge feeling liberated.
